Extending the flying season by reinforcing a grass runway

Challenge
Heavy rainfall repeatedly forced Texel Airport to close its grass runway, reducing the number of flights. The airport needed a solution that would improve load-bearing capacity without replacing the natural grass surface with asphalt.

Solution
36,000 m² of Terra-Grid E® 35 was installed directly on top of the existing grass runway without any ground preparation. The modular system was installed and interconnected in just ten working days.

Result
The result is a stable and reliable runway capable of withstanding heavy rainfall. At the same time, the runway has retained its green appearance and supports the airport’s sustainability vision. The improved traction also means that aircraft use less fuel during take-off and taxiing.

  • Fewer weather-related closures and a longer flying season
  • Installation in just ten working days without ground preparation
  • Four to five times less expensive than asphalt

We are closed from December 23 through January 4.

We will be back on Monday, January 5 – Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
